Pedestrian signal — don't walk
What it means
A flashing or steady orange hand warns pedestrians not to start crossing. Drivers should expect the traffic light to change soon.

How to recognise it
A lit orange raised hand on a black face; it may flash or stay steady.
Where you will see it
At intersections with traffic lights and crosswalks, in the same signal as the walking figure.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Treat your green as stale: expect the light to change soon and be prepared to stop.
- 2.People who cannot cross quickly, such as the elderly, people with disabilities and parents with young children, may still be in the crosswalk. Let them finish.
- 3.On foot, do not start to cross while it shows.
On the knowledge test
For pedestrians it means do not start to cross; for drivers it is a warning that the green is stale. It does not give drivers the right to push through people still crossing.
