Pedestrian signal — walk
What it means
The white walking figure tells pedestrians they may cross. In many places it changes to an orange hand just before the traffic light turns yellow, which is a clue for drivers that the green light is stale.

How to recognise it
A lit white walking figure on a black face, shown to people waiting to cross.
Where you will see it
At intersections with traffic lights and crosswalks, facing the pedestrians across each street.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Expect people in the crosswalk while it shows. Before you turn, watch for pedestrians on the cross street and yield to them.
- 2.Do not enter the crosswalk until it is empty, even on a green light.
- 3.Use it as a clue: when the white figure changes to an orange hand, the traffic light is about to turn yellow, so be prepared to stop.
