What it means
A lower speed limit begins ahead. Start slowing down now so you are at the new limit when you reach it.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

How to recognise it
A white rectangle like the maximum speed sign, but with an arrow pointing up above the number and km/h.
Where you will see it
On highways approaching a town, and before any stretch where the limit drops.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Ease off the accelerator now so you reach the lower limit by the time it begins.
- 2.Watch for the reason for the lower limit — a town, a school or playground zone, or a hazard ahead.
On the knowledge test
The arrow is the clue: this is advance notice, not the new limit itself. The expected response is to start slowing down, not to brake hard or to wait until you pass the next sign.
