What it means
Lane control signals hang over the lanes to show which are open. A red X means do not drive in this lane.

How to recognise it
A red X lit in a black box hung over the lane.
Where you will see it
Over lanes that open and close, such as a reversible lane marked with double broken yellow lines, where the lane control signal shows whether you may use it.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Do not drive in this lane. If you are approaching it, choose a lane that shows a green arrow.
- 2.Check your mirrors and blind spot and signal before you change lanes.
On the knowledge test
Lane control signals are about lanes, not intersections. This one means "do not drive in this lane"; it is not a signal to stop where you are.
