Keep right except to pass
What it means
Stay in the right lane and use the left lane only to pass another vehicle.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

How to recognise it
A white upright rectangle with KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS in black capital letters.
Where you will see it
On multi-lane highways and freeways, often just after an interchange.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Drive in the right-hand lane.
- 2.Move left only to pass, staying within the speed limit, then return to the right when it is safe.
- 3.On a freeway with more than two lanes each way, use the centre or a right-hand lane.
On the knowledge test
The left lane is for passing, not cruising. A wrong answer says you may stay left as long as you are at the speed limit.
