Passing lane ahead
What it means
A passing lane begins ahead. If faster traffic is following you, keep right there and let it go by.
White with black or red; a red circle with a slash means prohibited, a green circle means permitted.

How to recognise it

Where you will see it
On two-lane highways, before the stretches where an extra lane is added for passing, often on hills.
What to do when you see it
- 1.If you are driving slower than the traffic behind you, keep right when the passing lane opens.
- 2.Use the left lane only to pass, within the speed limit.
- 3.When a sign says the passing lane is ending, merge in good time: vehicles in both lanes must merge before it ends.
On the knowledge test
Know the two rules: keep right unless you are passing, and both lanes share the job of merging before the passing lane ends.
