Railway crossing (crossbuck)
What it means
Marks the crossing itself. If the lights are flashing, stop; then cross only when it is safe. Never try to beat a train.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

How to recognise it
A white X-shaped sign with a red border, the crossbuck, standing at the tracks.
Where you will see it
At public railway crossings, beside the tracks; the back of the sign carries the crossing location and a phone number.
What to do when you see it
- 1.If the lights are flashing or the bell is ringing, stop: a train is approaching.
- 2.Cross only when it is safe, and watch for a second train on another track.
- 3.Do not stop on the tracks; if traffic is backed up, wait until there is room to clear the crossing.
On the knowledge test
The guide's rule is "stop, then proceed when it is safe" when the crossing is active. If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get everyone out and away, then call the number on the back of the sign.
