Railway crossing ahead
What it means
A railway crossing is ahead. Slow down, look and listen for trains, and be prepared to stop. Trains always have the right-of-way.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

How to recognise it
A yellow diamond with a black road crossed by a railway track.
Where you will see it
Before a railway crossing you cannot see in time, for example on hilly or curvy roads.
What to do when you see it
- 1.Slow down, look and listen for a train, and be prepared to stop.
- 2.If an advisory speed tab is posted below, slow to it: the safe speed may be less than the posted limit.
- 3.Do not count on hearing a whistle; trains do not sound one at every crossing.
On the knowledge test
Trains always have the right-of-way and can take a very long distance to stop, so never try to beat one. A painted X on the pavement is another clue that a crossing is coming.
