Pedestrian-activated crosswalk
What it means
A crosswalk where pedestrians press a button to start the flashing light. When the light is flashing, be prepared to stop for people crossing.
Yellow diamonds (and five-sided yellow-green school signs) warn of hazards ahead.

How to recognise it
A white upright rectangle with a black walking figure, paired with an amber light that flashes once a pedestrian has pushed the button.
Where you will see it
Mid-block crossings and busy streets without a full traffic light, often with lights set into the pavement as well.
What to do when you see it
- 1.When the light is flashing, someone has asked to cross: slow down and be prepared to stop.
- 2.Stop for anyone in the crosswalk, and wait until they are clear of your half of the road.
- 3.Never pass a vehicle that has stopped at the crosswalk: it may be stopped for a pedestrian you cannot see.
On the knowledge test
The test ties this sign to the flashing light: the answer is "prepare to stop". A dark light does not make the crosswalk yours, since you must still yield to anyone crossing.
